Finding the right couples counselor is a big decision.
Here is a list of questions to ask your couples counselor before your first session:
We’ve answered the questions below, in case you were interested.
-
This is a personal question, but if you want the best chance of success, it’s best to be led by a couples counseling team who actually has a successful marriage. Besides, you’re not asking them about their sex life. That’s what they’re going to ask you about. :P
Yes, we have a golden marriage and have been together for 23 years and counting. We work extremely well together, and we believe that a golden marriage is the foundation for all beautiful things in life.
-
If the couples counselor doesn’t list a beginning, middle, and end to the process of working together, chances are they are just winging it. Every week, you’ll just talk about what has happened in between your sessions.
They should have a step-by-step customized plan laid out for you. Otherwise, you’re going to get the same cookie-cutter approach of talking about your feelings and working on your communication.
You do your research by exploring our website, listening to our podcast, reading our book, or joining our free online class. If you feel we could help you, book a free call where we see if we are the right match. If we are, it is a 12-week program, with daily support and guidance. You can learn more about the process in the free class we offer.
-
If the marriage counselor has a podcast, book, class, or other written reports they can share with you, it’s important you review them before deciding to work together.
Many of our free tools are on this page. You can check out our FB page and IG handle @goldenmarriage.88 to learn more about us.

If you don’t have a free first session with them, you may waste your time and money as you don’t know if you align with their style of marriage counseling or coaching.
We do offer a free call to those who watch our online masterclass. We answer most of your questions in the class.

You want to know if their professional training is aligned with your goals. Perhaps, they base their couples counseling practice on a particular religion or philosophy that doesn’t match yours.
Together, we have over 30 years of experience as therapists and coaches helping men and women with their mindset, physical health, and relationships. We have Gottman L1 & L2 training, as well as Emotional-Focused Therapy with Dr. Sue Johnson. Our Golden-Marriage Method™ is holistic, and based on neurochemistry and behavioral sciences. It models the 12-step AA program that has a high success rate for rehab for substance addiction. Our program and philosophy are based on the cumulative experiences we have had both personally, professionally, and clinically.

It’s important that they be honest with you, while of course, maintaining confidentiality of the clients they work with. You’re not asking for personal names or details of other clients, you just want to know if your marriage has a good chance. You want to look for a couples counselor who is 100% confident in their ability to help you, and that their program could work for you.
For the couples who show up and actually do the recommended work to heal their marriage, we have an 88.9% success rate. For the ~1/10 couples who decide to separate, it’s always because one of them does not show up to do the work and be accountable to their marriage. In those cases, the partner is 100% satisfied in that he/she gave it everything they had before deciding to separate.
